As a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (aka the Fenians) O'Reilly was involved in the recruitment of British soldier to that organisation. Discovery and imprisoned he was transported to Australia. After two years there he escaped to the USA, where he became a newspaper editor in Boston, known for his support of causes such as worker's rights and Irish Freedom.
